A new year, a new trend: Pickleball! Pickleball, a paddle sport that originally started in 1965, has recently gained popularity with people of all ages for being fun and simple to play.
For club founders Jonas Schanuth (12) and Cash Garvin (12), pickleball is a relatively new venture. Garvin only began playing a few months ago. Schanuth started his Pickleball experience this past summer.
“I’ve only been playing since July,” Schanuth stated.
Even though the two founders have just been playing for a short time, they decided to take their love for the game to the next level by starting the Helias Pickleball Club.
“During the summer, we played pretty much every night going down to Washington Courts till the lights turned off, and we just wanted to continue that at Helias, ” said Schanuth. “We wanted to spread to the school and it’s an easy sport to play so people enjoy it and have fun,” added Garvin.
Even with only being started this year, the club has gained over one-hundred members, proving the simplicity and fun that can be had while playing the game. Although there are many places to play pickleball independently (the washington courts, the YMCA, and the Linc), students still decided to join the school’s club.
“It just sounded really fun to play with all my friends from school. It really builds a great sense of community through fun,” said Kate Rodemann (10).
