On Friday October 25th at Ray Hentges Stadium, Sophomore Brock Martin set a new school record for field goal distance.
Down by twelve and with the clock ticking down to zero at the half, Martin and the Helias field goal unit were sent out onto the 44-yard line.
This meant he had to kick a 54-yard field goal, four yards further than the previous record held by Vito Calvaruso, a 2020 Helias Catholic graduate. Despite the staggering distance, Martin remained coolheaded.
“I didn’t feel any pressure to make the kick,” Martin said.
A converted soccer defender, Martin made big strides this year; however, he did not do it alone.
“Nic Calvaruso is the only guy I would really look up to, he taught me everything [kicking],” said Martin.
Last year, Martin split his time between Helias Catholic’s two football teams: gridiron and association. He did so after he was asked by head football coach Chris Hentges to kick for the freshman team. This year he made the choice to only play football and focus to improve his kicking. With newfound time his ability has increased, both and kicking and on both sides of the ball.
“I’m proud of what he’s accomplished and how he’s improved from last year,“ Calvaruso said after the record-setting kick.
This year has been extremely successful for the Helias Catholic kicking core with three records now being held by current students: all time points after touchdowns, total field goals, and farthest field goal distance.
