A new year, a new trend: Pickleball! Pickleball is a paddle sport that originally started in 1965, but has recently gained popularity by people of all ages for being fun and simple to play.
For club founders Jonas Schanuth (12) and Cash Garvin (12), pickleball is a relatively new venture. “Not too long, it’s only been four months” and “I’ve only been playing since July,” the two said respectively.
Even though the two founders have just been playing for a short time, they decided to take their love for the game to the next level by starting the Helias Pickleball Club.
“During the summer, we played pretty much every night going down to Washington Courts till the lights turned off, and we just wanted to continue that at Helias, ” said Schanuth. “We wanted to spread to the school and it’s an easy sport to play so people enjoy it and have fun,” added Garvin.
Even with only being started this year, the club has gained over one-hundred members, proving the simplicity and fun that can be had while playing the game. Although there are many places to play pickleball independently; the washington courts, the YMCA, and the Linc, students still decided to join the club for many reasons.
Kate Kampeter was told by Coach Yarnell to join and Kate Rodemann joined because, “It just sounded really fun to play with all my friends from school. It really builds a great sense of community through fun.”
